We love the hot weather but recognise it can play havoc with our hair especially humidity!
Here’s a few tips from our team to help you understand why it happens and what steps you can take to keep it under control.
Why does hair frizz in humid weather or settings?
Humidity causes hair to frizz due to the moisture in the air. When hair absorbs this moisture, the hydrogen bonds in the hair’s structure break, causing the hair to swell and change its shape. This results in the appearance of frizz, particularly in hair that is curly or wavy, as the natural texture becomes more pronounced and unruly. The outer layer of the hair, known as the cuticle, opens up in response to the humidity, making it more susceptible to frizz.
How can frizzy hair be eliminated?
While it may be difficult to completely eliminate frizz, there are several effective strategies to manage and reduce it:
- Use anti-frizz products: Look for serums, oils, and leave-in conditioners specifically designed to combat frizz. These products help to smooth the hair, seal the cuticle, and reduce the impact of humidity.
- Hydrate your hair: Ensure your hair is well-moisturized by using hydrating shampoos and conditioners. Regular deep conditioning treatments can also help maintain moisture levels and prevent frizz.
- Avoid heat styling: Excessive heat can damage the hair and make it more prone to frizz. When possible, opt for air drying or use heat protectant sprays if you need to style your hair with hot tools.
- Protect your hair: Wearing a hat or using a scarf to cover your hair when outdoors can help shield it from humidity and prevent frizz from forming.
- Choose the right hairstyle: Opt for hairstyles that naturally control frizz, such as braids, buns, or ponytails. These styles can help keep your hair in place and minimize the impact of humidity.
By implementing these tips, you can significantly reduce frizz and maintain smoother, more manageable hair even in humid conditions.
Choosing the right products
As we alluded to earlier, using the right products is key to taming frizzy hair and this is not just in humid conditions but throughout the year to ensure hair is nourished and healthy.
We offer a range of Wella products, and our team can advise on the right products for your hair type.
By consistently using the correct products, your hair will be well cared for and whilst you can’t help frizz happening, you can certainly take some steps to try and minimise it.
Have a wonderful summer!’
