Getting that fresh salon feel, every day of the year when you’re at home, is easier than you may think!
Annie Beckett, one of my fantastic stylists, shares her top tips on how to make every day a salon day; well almost!
Get into a routine
I’m not suggesting that you have a regimented routine where you cancel or decline plans to wash your hair but having a structure to your hair care plans will ultimately pay off in the long run. Keeping it simple, is key to success, and if it’s a straightforward routine you’ve got more chance of sticking to it. We’re not talking about mountains of products and hours in the bathroom, just products that work for your hair type and your lifestyle.
The first step to establishing a routine is knowing what type of hair you have. This means that you can build a product portfolio that will support your hair type rather than fight against it. If you’re a regular client at Rebecca Dickenson, Hair Body and Soul then your stylish will have discussed your hair type with you. However, if you’re unsure, or are visiting for the first time, simply ask you stylist for their guidance to see whether you have fine, thick, frizzy, oily or other common hair type.
Building a product portfolio
Once you know the hair type you are dealing with you can begin to build your product portfolio. For this you will need to have:
• A shampoo and conditioner suitable to your hair type
• A heat protector spray or cream for styling
• Good quality hairdryer, brushes and other heat styling tools
• Styling products as required
Remember also that buying quality products, such as the ones we have in our salon, really do make a difference. Try and purchase products that are free from sulphates and other complex chemical ingredients. The more natural the product, the better it is for your hair. Try and avoid some of the most well advertise high street brands. Take a look at the ingredients on the back and you’ll see why some are full of things that really won’t do your hair much good at all.
So, how many times do you need to wash your hair each week? Typically, 2-3 times a week is enough, but we know that busy lifestyles, gym sessions and more mean that sometimes more is unavoidable.
When you are washing your hair though, always wash twice, run conditioner through and make sure product is thoroughly rinsed away at each stage. Left in product residue can dull hair and affect scalp health too.
In addition to your home care routine, it’s also important to have regular trims, even for our clients who have long hair. They are helpful in maintaining good health hair and can keep styles looking sharp and easier to care for.
Additionally, try not to over colour your hair and keep heated styling to a minimum.
Healthy diet, healthy hair
Finally, for all the advice we can give you about the products you use and the hair care and styling routine you keep, it’s worth knowing that it’s not just these that make a difference to hair health.
It’s also about what you eat and drink that can have a positive or negative effect on hair health.
A diet rich in Omega3, protein and vitamins and water, will help to keep your hair in great condition. Ensuring things like salmon, nuts, berries, yoghurt and lots of home cooked, unprocessed food will make your hair look good and you’ll feel great too!
Remember that Rebecca, the team and I are here to help however we can so you can maintain healthy hair, every day of the year.
